From a pop-up in Peckham to a yearlong residency at Climpson’s Arch, the team at Som Saa comprising of Andy Oliver, Mark Dobbie and Tom George are finally settling down with a permanent new home near Spitalfields. Opening in an old fabric warehouse off Commercial Street, they will be bringing a menu of lesser known dishes from regional Thailand. Famed for their Bangkok HOT som tam, Som Saa have created some new dishes for the opening too, including ‘gaeng daeng moo yang’ a red curry with grilled pork, green banana and holy basil and the ‘pad char ahaan talay’ with stir fired prawns, clams and squid, lime leaves, peppercorns and ginger. As well as serving a daily changing ‘chef’s special’, curry pastes and coconut cream will also be whipped up in house.
Six weeks after the big open, the lunch menu will kick off with street food style plates, like ‘pad grapow pbet’, stir fried duck with holy basil, chillies and a crispy duck egg, and ‘khao soi neua’, Northern style beef curry noodle soup. And on weekends you’ll be able to get Thai brunch, including wok fried Thai omelettes, Thai-Chinese style doughnuts, and Bangkok Marys. They’ve really gone to town, with a bar dedicated to Thai cocktails and Asian beers on top of all that. We’ll be first in line…
