A new shopping centre from the designers at Heatherwick has been signed-off for the London King’s Cross area. It is set to convert a historic Victorian coal yard into a canal-side shopping destination.
“These two historic structures were never originally designed for people to circulate through and by themselves would have never made a successful retail destination if we did nothing more than clean them and fill them with shops,” said Heatherwick.
According to the developer, “The proposals will establish Coal Drops Yard as a retail destination, with close to 100,000 square feet of shopping, eating and drinking, and events space.”
There will be enough space for roughly 60 businesses across the development, which will be fully pedestrianised, and compose a broad mix of retail, leisure and hospitality. As of yet, no brands have signed-up, and the project is being overseen by King’s Cross Central Limited Partnership. With tourists and commuters from the nearby King’s Cross and Euston stations, as well as those who live and work in the regenerated King’s Cross, the site is set to receive major footfall.
What the designs of the new King’s Cross shopping centre demonstrate is that a shopping experience driven by a strong concept can generate a unique aesthetic which draws customers and becomes a destination in itself.
